Big Five Safaris in Africa

What To Expect and Consider

A Brief Idea

What Is a Big Five Safari?

Few experiences can rival the excitement of Africa’s majestic wildlife. The Big Five of Africa include the lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. Originally, these animals were coined by hunters as the toughest animals to hunt on foot; the term now represents a sought-after experience for wildlife enthusiasts and safari tourists.

Big Five tours are the most preferred African Safari activities. Whether it’s a wildlife photographer or a group safari, honeymooners or adventure seekers, Big Five Tours have always been the top activities. It’s a thrilling and unforgettable way to connect with Africa’s wildlife and immerse yourself in its diverse ecosystems. On a Big Five safari, visitors can track these majestic animals in their natural habitats across different renowned parks:

Addo Elephant Park and Kruger National Park in South Africa
Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania
Maasai Mara and Amboseli National Park in Kenya

Wildlife to See

What Animals to Spot on a Big Five Safari in Africa

African countries host diverse wildlife, including mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, and marine life. Amongst the diversity of wildlife, the Big Five is considered to be the most popular:

Lion:
The king of the jungle, often seen in prides across savannahs.

Elephant:
The largest land mammal, known for its intelligence and social structure.

Buffalo:
A strong, formidable herbivore, commonly found in herds.

Leopard:
Elusive and solitary, often spotted in trees or stalking prey.

Rhinoceros:
Both white and black rhinos are found in various parks, notable for their size and horns.

What to See?

Best Time to Go on an African Big Five Safari

The best time for a Big Five safari is during the dry season, from June to October. Places like Kruger National Park (South Africa), Serengeti (Tanzania), and Maasai Mara (Kenya). During this period, animals gather around water sources, and natural vegetation is scarce, making it easy to spot wildlife.

If you are looking to travel amongst fewer crowds and in cooler weather, try the shoulder months of April, May and November. Lush green vegetation can offer stunning backdrops for the wild. However, try to avoid Big Five tracking during the rainy season (November to March), as the trails can be muddy and risky for game drives and walking safaris, and storms may completely prevent hot-air balloon safaris.
