The summer months (from December to February) offer lush greenery, perfect for enjoying the area’s vibrant flora. The winter months (May to August) are colder and drier, with clear skies ideal for stargazing and hiking, though some trails may be more challenging due to snow or frost.
In the Autumn season, the weather is stable, with fewer thunderstorms. Many of the seasonal rivers run low during this time of the year. The Drakensberg is a UNESCO World Heritage site where a safari offers the opportunity to experience bird-watching, compared to witnessing the Big Five. The mountain offers a malaria-free experience.
It’s not a traditional safari destination. You can see jackals, bushbucks, baboons, etc. You may also spot a cheetah and a giraffe in some private reserves in the area. You can spot a bearded vulture, southern bald ibis, and cape vulture in the Drakensberg.
On your safari to the Drakensberg, pack warm layers, comfortable hiking boots, and windproof jackets to cope with the fluctuating weather.
Though it’s a short journey, it’s strictly advised to hire a guide for a successful hike. The area is remote and often lacks proper marking. Whether it’s an overnight, a multiday, or a high-berg safari, take a guide.
The region is suitable for all. Hikers can choose from 1-day walks to multi-day treks, depending on their experience and physical fitness.
