The Giraffe Centre, located near Nairobi, Kenya, is one of the country’s most popular wildlife conservation centres. It was established in 1979 by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife to preserve and breed the endangered Rothschild giraffe, which had been on the verge of extinction before its conservation success. The Giraffe Centre is a great place to visit at any time of year, with Nairobi’s moderate average temperature making it accessible to anyone. The dry seasons, June to October and January to February, are the best months for clear-sky days with moderate weather and activity. Because giraffes are active during these months, and because there are concrete pathways and lower activity on the surrounding paths, these months are very enjoyable for walking and taking pictures.
The wet season is from March and end in December. At this time, when the vegetation in the safari area is lush and green, it provides you with great photo opportunities. In addition, while it is possible to have some rain during the wet seasons, the months of March to May and November to December typically have fewer people in the safari area. You may have a more relaxing, immersive experience in March to May and November to December. Another advantage of visiting during the wet months of March to May and November to December is the opportunity to see migrating birds, which are much more evident then.

The best-known resident of the Giraffe Centre is the Rothschild’s giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi), considered the rarest giraffe subspecies on the planet and currently found only in a small part of Africa. Located near the city at the very edge of Nairobi in the Langata region, it is in a lush forest area. It can be easily accessed from other area’s attractions and nearby nature reserves.

The Centre is open all year. The giraffes are very active early in the morning, and feeding sessions are in full swing. The surrounding forest will also be cooler and quieter earlier in the day.
Most people spend between 1 & 2 hours, enough time for giraffe feeding, photography and a nice leisurely walk on the nature trails.
