The Kakamega Forest Reserve, located in Kenya’s southeastern region, is a hidden gem in the Taita Hills. The majority of Kakamega Forest Reserve spans approximately 28000 acres and is located at the foot of the stunning Chyulu Hills. Although this beautiful sanctuary contains many different terrains, such as savannahs, forests, and wetlands, it is also known as a Wildlife Sanctuary for its large diversity of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, lions, and buffalo, as well as a variety of bird species.
Kakamega Forest Reserve is a privately owned conservation area with much less foot traffic than other safari destinations in Kenya, making it more intimate and serene. The property also includes abundant wildlife and culturally rich Taita communities, both essential to preserving this environment. Visitors are afforded numerous activities, including game drives, walking safaris, and birdwatching, all of which allow guests to experience Kenya’s wildlife in a tranquil environment.

The season you travel will influence your overall experience in Kakamega Forest. Weather conditions, such as rainfall, and the abundance of wildlife, will all affect how enjoyable your time at Kakamega is. In addition, weather conditions can dramatically affect the condition of the forest trails. The dry season (January to February and June to September) is the optimal time to hike in the forest, as the trails are much easier to navigate.
While the rainy season creates muddy trails, the rainforest is at its most beautiful, with healthy, colourful plant growth, vibrant bird life, and a sense of life. Fewer crowd numbers also characterise the wet season. Conversely, because the rainforest is a year-round destination, each season offers visitors a unique view of its beauty.
Kakamega forest, which hosts more than 300 bird species and 400 documented butterfly species, is also a refuge for over 7 primate species, making it one of the best spots to visit if you enjoy nature and watching birds. Birdwatchers from around the world, as well as throughout Kenya, visit Kakamega Forest for its reputation as a birdwatching destination. There are several stunning locations to visit in Kakamega, including Buyangu Hill, an easy climb to a rocky peak with panoramic views of the forest; Lirhanda Hill; and Isiukhu Waterfalls.
There are around 36 different species of snakes that can find plentiful habitat in the forest. Many of these snake species were originally discovered in this forest and have also been discovered on the continent of Africa that is in West Africa. The collection of snakes can be divided into many categories; e.g., Forest Cobra, Gold’s Cobra, Forest Night Adder, Black-Lipped Cobra, Jameson’s Mamba, Bush Viper, Rhinoceros Horned Viper and Gabon Viper. The beauty and unique plant composition of the forest and its glades (meadows) are appreciated by both national and international audiences and have yielded more than 380 tree species.
It is located in western Kenya, close to Lake Victoria and within Kakamega County, is the Kakamega Forest Nature Reserve.
The Kakamega Forest Nature Reserve is the only tropical rainforest in Kenya, making it a hotspot for biodiversity, with a wealth of plant and animal species.
The Kakamega Forest has an incredible variety of wildlife, including primates, various rare bird species, butterflies, and many different types of plant life.
