Marsabit National Park & Reserve

Marsabit Highlands Wildlife Reserve

A hidden oasis of wildlife & volcanic landscapes

It is located in Northern Kenya and is regarded as a unique, ecologically diverse haven, offering a mix of wildlife, forests, and striking landscapes. It covers over 1,500 square kilometres and is an essential part of the larger Marsabit ecosystem. Mainly, it serves as a sanctuary for both animal and plant species in the region.

Visitors come to this park because it is unique in its natural beauty. It is located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, and it offers incredible views of volcanic mountains, crater lakes, and dry plains. The park is located in a unique area with two distinct ecosystems: a dry, flat base and a forested top.

The Marsabit Forest is a true oasis amongst an otherwise dry region. It provides a cool, moist environment that supports several wildlife species, including elephants, leopards, hyenas, and rare bird species. If you want to explore an isolated area of Kenya and really experience nature, this is a must!

What is the Best Time to Visit?

Perfect seasons to ensure exceptional wildlife viewing and scenic exploration

Depending on when you plan your trip to Marsabit National Park and Reserve, the season can affect your overall experience. The following factors will influence your experience: weather, animal migration, and the park’s accessibility. When you visit the park during the dry seasons (from June to October), it is best to view animals because they congregate around water sources, especially Lake Paradise; this makes them easier to find.

During the wet season from November to May, the park turns into a beautiful green oasis, with misty forests and more birds. While animals may be spread out more, the scenery is beautiful, and the safari experience is quieter and much more peaceful.

Before travelling to Marsabit, travellers should also be aware of the distance to the park, their budget, and the level of comfort they would like. Since the park is remote, Marsabit offers a more exclusive safari experience, with fewer crowds than other parks. Whether you prefer rugged or slower-paced adventures, the right season will offer an amazing, unique, and customised journey.

If you plan properly, your trip to the park will be one of the best you take, giving you the chance to see animals, view scenery, and learn about the culture – all in one great place.

Extraordinary Biodiversity and Fauna

Marsabit National Park is popular for its extraordinary biodiversity

The park was created from the remains of an extinct volcanic mountain, and the dense montane section is surrounded by arid land, creating a unique habitat for the wide variety of species that live there. It is known for its iconic animals, such as elephants with large tusks, lions, leopards, buffalo, and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. The park’s forested area is home to several rare animal species found nowhere else in Kenya.

If you’re a bird lover, this area has a lot of opportunities to see many different birds. There are more than 350 different types of birds that have been recorded in this area alone. You can see many different species at the crater lakes or in the surrounding wooded areas. Birdwatchers in this area will find plenty of opportunities to take pictures and observe birds.

These diverse geographic features in the area, along with the combination of three types of regions, create a highly important area for the conservation of regionally endemic species and migratory species visiting, both of which are critical to maintaining the region’s ecological balance.
