Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Iconic Safari Destination

The Iconic Soul of the African Savannah

It is located in southwestern Kenya. The Maasai Mara National Reserve, part of the greater Serengeti Ecosystem, is renowned for its African wildlife. It is often called ‘Kenya’s crown jewel.’

Maasai Mara Reserve includes over 1,500 km² of rolling grasslands, acacia woodlands, and winding rivers. It also includes one of the most spectacular large-scale species migrations each year: from October to April, millions of wildebeests, zebras, and Thompson’s gazelles cross from Tanzania into the Maasai Mara to reach safe feeding/breeding areas.

The Maasai Mara is open, offering unobstructed views of animals from different angles and providing good visibility for hunters. The Mara River gives water and food for all animals that use it, as well as providing essential nesting and breeding habitats for birds.

The Maasai Mara supports a very high density of wildlife species, including the five largest: the lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhinoceros. There is presence of huge number of predators in the reserve, offering the best chances to see live predation (as well as other wild behaviours). Hundreds of bird species inhabit the riverine areas and plains of the Mara Reserve.

Beyond wildlife, the Maasai Mara is well connected to the indigenous Maasai people, whose traditions and pastoral lifestyle continue to shape the entire region.

Best Time to Plan Your Safari

An unforgettable travel experience at the Heart of Maasai Mara

The travel experience will take place during your visit to the Maasai Mara and its wildlife encounters, during the best season to go on your safari. Your travel arrangements will depend on many variables, including the climate, animal migration patterns (to determine what you will see), and the total number of visitors during your safari.

For the ultimate viewing of both wildlife and scenic beauty, the dry season is the best time to visit. The dry season exists from July through October. This period is known as the Great Migration because millions of wildebeest and zebra migrate into the Masai Mara. The dry season allows those on safari to see these migrating species, as well as their predators (lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas). In addition, the dry season has shorter grasses and fewer water sources for the animals, which give safari-goers better opportunities to see them.

Travelling to the Maasai Mara between November and June (the wet season) provides a richer environment with a more picturesque landscape. It is ideal for those seeking a more tranquil safari experience. There are also fewer visitors during the wet season, which creates an even more tranquil experience. When planning your safari, other considerations include your distance travelled, cost, and preferred accommodation level.

Flourishing Ecosystems and Wildlife

Home to iconic species & world-class safari experiences

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is an international landmark for its considerable animal diversity and density. The reserve encompasses vast expanses of unobstructed grassy fields that are part of the larger Serengeti multi-national ecosystem, which has one of Africa’s highest densities of animal life.

The Maasai Mara is also known for its Big Five (i.e., lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhinoceros), along with countless other species that roam freely across the open savanna. In fact, it is home to the largest population of predators in the world, allowing visitors to witness the thrill of predation and natural wildlife behaviour.

If you enjoy birds, you will find your dream come true here; over 470 species of birds have been recorded, including birds of prey, wading, and migratory species. The Maasai Mara has various ecosystems (e.g., grassland, riverine forest) that form different habitats, each of which is part of the balance of nature that supports the many forms of life found within this remarkable ecosystem.
