Meru National Park is one of the most pristine and beautiful safari destinations in Kenya. It is located in the eastern part of the country, 350 km northeast of Nairobi. It is famous for its untamed beauty and its lack of many visitors, giving it a quintessential African safari feel across a vast expanse of land. The terrain consists of a mix of open savannah, riverine forest, swamps, and rocky outcrops. Meru National Park is both remote and reachable. Meru is a famous former home of Elsa the lioness, the world’s greatest conservation story.
The park boasts the “Big Five” including lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo and rhinos as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra and a wide array of antelopes. The waterways and wetland areas also provide habitat for a spectacular range of bird species, making them ideal places for any bird enthusiast to capture that shot of a rare bird in its natural habitat.

Meru National Park is a wonderful place to visit at most times of the year, but as with any park, certain periods are better than others to help give you the best safari experience. Certain aspects, like wildlife movement and road access, are factors in planning your trip.
The park receives most of its visitors in the dry season (June to October) and again between January and February, which are generally considered the best times to visit the park and find animals, which are concentrated around the rivers and water holes. Roads and tracks also offer better access and are easier to drive on, with fewer risks of getting stuck in the mud, enabling the clearest views across the more open areas of the park for both photography and exploration.
In the wet seasons (March to May and November to December), the park’s landscape is at its most vibrant, and the whole environment is lush and green. Certain areas are inaccessible during the wet season. Still, this time of year offers excellent bird-watching opportunities, with increased numbers of migratory species, fewer other visitors, and the chance to experience a tranquil environment and see the park’s abundance of vibrant flora.
Meru National Park is known worldwide for its wide variety of species and ecosystems. It is an amazing mix of riverine forest, open savanna, swamps, and rocky regions. All of these habitats are home to a variety of flora and fauna.
The ‘Big Five’ are native to this region and include lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo. Also present in the area are cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and quite a variety of antelopes. Birds in the area are very diverse, thanks to the presence of rivers and wetlands in Meru National Park, making it a haven for bird lovers. It is unspoilt, wild, and calm, offering an extremely rewarding safari experience.
