No. You don’t need to be an expert climber for most African mountains. Many well-known peaks are trekking mountains, not technical climbs, meaning they can be done with basic fitness and guided support.
The primary risks are altitude sickness, unpredictable weather, and physical strain, slippery or technical terrain, limited medical access and navigational risks.
Temperatures can drop to -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F) on summit night.
The rates vary by route and length. Shorter routes (5 days) have lower success rates; longer routes (7+ days) have higher success rates.
