Mount Longonot National Park is one of Kenya’s most scenic havens in the Great Rift Valley, some 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, near Lake Naivasha. The park is dominated mostly by Mount Longonot, a dormant volcano, known for its steep-sided crater and stunning views. Spanning approximately 52 square kilometres, it provides a small but thrilling outdoor adventure.
The park is primarily centred on the huge crater of Mount Longonot. It features rugged lava flows, lush forests inside the crater, and grasslands around the mountain. Makes it an important natural habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna.
The park, located in Nakuru County, is within easy reach of Nairobi, making it an ideal spot for day trips, hiking and eco-tourism. Hiking the trail to the top and around the rim of the crater offers panoramic views of the Rift Valley and surrounding lakes, making it a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts and adventurers.
Mount Longonot National Park is known for its conservation value and beauty. Nature lovers can spot wildlife such as buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and antelopes in the lower parts of the mountain. Bird watchers can also spot various bird species in the park.
Go on an unforgettable adventure in a challenging volcanic landscape with knowledgeable guides who reveal its geological marvels, ecosystems, and significance for conservation.
The Mount Longonot National Park is home to wildlife that thrives in its unique volcanic and savannah environments.
Experience fun and thrilling outdoor activities that let you connect closely with both adventure and nature.
When planning your trip to Mount Longonot National Park, timing is essential to experience the park at its best. Consider how the time you choose will affect trekking conditions, sightings, views, and crowd levels.
The dry season ranges (from January to March and June to October) would be the ideal time for your trip. During these months, the trekking trails of Mount Longonot become easier to ascend and descend. Additionally, the dry seasons assure you crystal clear skies, which will give you an outstanding view of the entire Rift Valley, and it’s easier to see wild animals during these times.
During the wet season (from April to May and November to December), the entire landscape turns green, providing the most striking vistas. During these months, the hiking trails will not be as easy to traverse, and you may not get as many animal sightings; however, it will be the most suitable time for birding and photographing the beautiful landscapes.
Mount Longonot National Park is renowned for its volcanic ecology and diversity. The savannah, the forested interior of the crater, and the rocky landscape of the mountain support diverse flora and fauna. Various wildlife species, including buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and various antelope, can be seen roaming the lower slopes of the park. Various wildlife and birds also inhabit the lush, forested interiors of the crater. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy a wide variety of bird species in the park year-round.
