The Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania, within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is one of the most famous sights in Africa and the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. It was formed millions of years ago when an enormous volcano collapsed, and it is known for its natural beauty and high wildlife density.
The Ngorongoro Crater covers 260 km² and effectively serves as an enclosure for an extremely high concentration of animals. The permanent water supply to the crater supports a very productive ecosystem of grasslands, wetlands, forests, and alkaline lakes, making it one of the top year-round wildlife-viewing destinations in Africa.
The Ngorongoro Crater is conveniently located near Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital, and is part of Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. The Ngorongoro Crater’s enclosed nature provides an ideal environment for wildlife to remain year-round; therefore, visitors can see an incredible amount of wildlife over a very short distance.
The Ngorongoro Crater offers guided safari tours that take you through the various habitats within the caldera.
Home to one of Africa's densest and most diverse wildlife populations. It is a nature lover's paradise.
Enjoy all of the many things to do while you explore Ngorongoro Crater and have a close encounter with wildlife and nature:
The ideal time to visit for an unforgettable safari is during the dry season, i.e., from June till October; this is the best time to see wildlife because that’s when the animals come to drink. You can see many animals throughout the year in the Ngorongoro Crater because of its permanent water sources.
The rainy season, from November until March, provides the other half of a full year’s worth of exploration opportunities. During this time, the area is transformed into a green and colourful landscape that attracts large numbers of migratory birds and reduces the number of tourists travelling in the region. Most roads in the area will be challenging due to the rain. Still, they will also be the most aesthetically pleasing and visually stimulating for photography and birding.
When planning your trip, keep in mind the distance you’ll travel, your finances, and your overall comfort level. Visitors can find an abundance of luxury lodges and camping options within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Arusha, allowing them to customise their experience to their preferences.
It is famous worldwide for its rich biodiversity and high wildlife density. This enclosed ecosystem is a great place to see many different types of animals and is considered one of Africa’s best safari locations. Within the Ngorongoro Crater are several species that make up the “Big Five”, including lions, elephants, buffalo,o leopards, and the endangered black rhino. The varied habitats in the Ngorongoro Crater also support both resident and migratory birds, with many types of waterbirds inhabiting the sandy shores of Lake Magadi, which is home to a variety of plant species that help sustain a healthy environment.
Here you will find more than 500 bird species that live along the lake’s shores, including flamingos and other true waterbirds. The Ngorongoro Crater has one of the densest wildlife populations in the world, the most incredible landscape you will ever see, and is accessible year-round, all of which combine to make for an incredible safari experience that blends nature, conservation, adventure, and beauty.

In Northern Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, northwest of the city of Arusha.
The weather is generally mild at the Ngorongoro Crater; however, conditions tend to be cooler near the crater rim and warmer on the crater floor. Seasonal rains can cause the crater floor to receive excessive moisture during certain months.
Ngorongoro Crater is the largest complete volcanic caldera in the world, covering about 260 square kilometres.
Ngorongoro Crater is excellent for:
1) Game Drives
2) Wildlife viewing
3) Photography
4) Bird Watching across the Entire Crater Floor.
Hiking in the Ngorongoro Crater is limited to areas outside of the crater. However, guided walks are available along the rim and in the surrounding highlands.
