Ol Pejeta Wildlife Sanctuary

Conservation-Focused Wildlife Retreat

A Natural Paradise for African Wildlife and World-Class Conservation

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is an incredible wildlife area in Kenya, located between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare mountain range. With an excellent track record of outstanding conservation, Ol Pejeta is a visually stunning area that’s committed to protecting endangered species and has taken steps to develop sustainable tourism.

At approximately 360 square kilometres, Ol Pejeta represents the best of a modern wildlife sanctuary. It has the largest population of black rhinos in East Africa, as well as the world’s last two northern white rhinos, clearly making Ol Pejeta important for the future of conservation globally.

In addition to open savanna, acacia forest, and riverine habitats, Ol Pejeta also hosts an outstanding array of wildlife: elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, and many species of antelope.

Ol Pejeta offers a range of unique conservation programs, including wildlife protection, community development, and environmental education. People can visit Ol Pejeta through game drives and guided safari tours, and experience other unique experiences (for example, the opportunity to visit the chimpanzee sanctuary, the only one of its kind in Kenya).

What’s the best season to visit?

The timing of your visit is critical to maximising your safari experience in an exceptional conservancy situated between the Laikipia Plateau and the Mount Kenya foothills. The best time to visit is during the dry season between June and October and again between January and February.

During these months, wildlife gathers at water sources, making it easier to spot iconic species (elephants, lions, rhinos) on game drives across the open savannah. This period is also beneficial for photography, as you can count on clear weather.

The months of March through May and November through December are known as the Wet Season, characterised by heavy rainfall. The conservancy’s landscape becomes a beautiful green environment during the wet seasons, making it a wonderful place to see migratory birds returning to visit and to witness the entire ecosystem at its most vibrant.

Rich Biodiversity and Wildlife

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is renowned for its high biodiversity and is a global leader in conservation. The conservancy spans thousands of acres of savannah and woodland, and provides habitat to an amazing array of wildlife.

It is home to East Africa’s largest population of black rhinos and the only remaining northern white rhinos on earth, making it a critical elephant in the preservation of endangered species.

A special highlight is that of chimpanzee sanctuary Another special attraction in the Sanctuary is a chimpanzee sanctuary, it is the only refuge in the entire country that cares for rescued chimpanzees for the rest of their lives. A collaborative venture with international organizations, it educates tourists about chimpanzee rescues and rehabilitation programs and conservations while letting them observe these remarkable animals in their habitat.
