David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

Overview

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) Elephant Orphanage, located in Nairobi National Park, is one of Kenya’s most beloved wildlife conservation organizations. Established in 1977 by Dr. Daphne Sheldrick in honour of her late husband, David Sheldrick, the orphanage is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned elephants, particularly those affected by poaching.

The centre provides a safe haven for elephants to recover, grow, and eventually be reintroduced into the wild. Visitors to the orphanage can witness firsthand the heartwarming work being done to protect elephants, learning about the animals’ recovery process and the ongoing efforts to combat poaching. The orphanage also plays a key role in raising awareness of the global ivory trade and the importance of conservation. With its daily public feeding sessions, the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage offers a rare opportunity to get up close to the gentle giants and support vital conservation work.

Best Time To Visit

The Best Time to Visit the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is during the feeding time from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM daily. This is when the elephants are most active and playful, giving visitors a chance to see them up close and interact with them as they enjoy their bottles of milk. The dry season (from June to September) is ideal for visiting as the weather is more predictable, with fewer chances of rain. This period also tends to attract more tourists, but the experience remains very rewarding. Alternatively, the wet season (from March to May) offers fewer crowds, and you might enjoy a more peaceful visit.
