Gombe Stream National Park

Overview

Gombe Stream National Park, located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, is renowned for its fascinating population of chimpanzees and its lush, diverse ecosystems. Covering just 52 square kilometres, Gombe is one of Tanzania’s smallest parks, yet it holds immense ecological significance.

The park gained worldwide recognition through the pioneering work of primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, who studied the chimpanzee population here for over 50 years. Visitors to Gombe can track these fascinating primates through dense forests and steep hills, experiencing one of the last remaining sanctuaries for wild chimpanzees. The park is also home to other wildlife, including baboons, vervet monkeys, and a variety of bird species. Its remote location and tranquillity make it a prime destination for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and those interested in primate behaviour.

Best Time To Visit

The Best Time to Visit Gombe Stream National Park is during the dry season, from June to October. This period offers the best opportunities for chimpanzee tracking, as the animals tend to be more active and easier to spot. The dry weather also makes hiking and walking safaris more comfortable. The wet season (November to May) sees lush greenery, and although chimpanzees can still be observed, the trails may be more challenging, and some areas of the park can become muddy. However, the wet season offers better opportunities for birdwatching and seeing the park’s plant life in full bloom.
