Mahale Mountain National Park

Overview

Located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, Mahale Mountain National Park is one of the most remote and unspoiled parks in Africa, offering an unforgettable safari experience. The park covers over 1,600 square kilometres and is renowned for its population of wild chimpanzees, which has been the subject of extensive research and conservation efforts.

The park’s dramatic landscapes include lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and the towering Mahale Mountains, creating a stunning backdrop for wildlife viewing. In addition to chimpanzees, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including baboons, antelopes, and over 300 species of birds. The park’s seclusion ensures a peaceful and intimate safari experience, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and those seeking adventure in one of Africa’s most beautiful and untouched environments.

Best Time To Visit

The Best Time to Visit Mahale Mountain National Park is during the dry season, from June to October. This period offers the best conditions for chimpanzee tracking as the animals are more active and easier to spot. The dry season also ensures more comfortable weather and easier access to the park, which can be difficult during the rainy months. The wet season (November to May) brings lush landscapes and fewer tourists, providing a more tranquil experience. However, the rainforest can be quite slippery, and some trekking routes may be challenging during this time. The wet season is also ideal for birdwatching, as migratory birds are abundant.
