Mikumi National Park

Overview

Mikumi National Park, located in southern Tanzania, is one of the country’s most accessible and diverse wildlife destinations. Stretching across 3,230 square kilometers, Mikumi is part of the larger Selous Game Reserve ecosystem, making it a prime spot for safaris.

The park features a variety of habitats, including open savannah, wetlands, and dense woodlands, offering a unique opportunity to experience diverse wildlife in their natural settings. While Mikumi may be less crowded than Tanzania’s more famous parks, it offers an exceptional safari experience with excellent game viewing. Visitors can encounter a wide range of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino), alongside many bird species, making it an ideal destination for both first-time safari-goers and seasoned travellers.

Best Time To Visit

The Best Time to Visit Mikumi National Park is during the dry season from June to October. During these months, wildlife is more concentrated around the water sources, making game viewing more rewarding. The dry season also means fewer mosquitoes, making for a more comfortable experience. For birdwatching, the wet season (November to April) is ideal, as migratory birds flock to the park and the landscape turns lush and green. However, some roads may be harder to navigate due to rain, and wildlife can be more spread out as water sources are plentiful.
