Selous Game Reserve

Overview

The Selous Game Reserve, now renamed as Nyerere National Park (in-part), is a protected nature reserve and wilderness area in southern Tanzania. Covering over 50,000 square kilometers, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a pristine safari experience, with less tourist traffic compared to other famous parks in Tanzania. The reserve is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, including vast savannahs, wetlands, forests, and rivers, making it a haven for wildlife.

The Selous is home to large populations of elephants, lions, wild dogs, and crocodiles, as well as a variety of bird species. The unique mix of game drives, boat safaris, and walking safaris offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience wildlife in their natural habitats. Its remote location ensures an intimate and tranquil experience, making Selous an ideal destination for those seeking adventure and solitude.

Best Time To Visit

The Best Time to Visit Selous is during the dry season, from June to October. This period offers excellent game viewing, as animals gather around the remaining water sources, making them easier to spot. The weather is cooler, and the reserve is less humid, offering more comfortable conditions for safaris. For birdwatchers, the wet season (November to April) is also a great time to visit, as migratory birds flock to the area. However, some roads may become difficult to navigate due to rain, and the foliage may be thicker, making it harder to spot animals.
