The Selous Game Reserve (formerly the Selous Reserve) is one of the largest areas of ecological significance that has not been significantly affected by human activity. It is located in Southern Tanzania, just 250km from the Indian Ocean coast. It covers an area of over 50,000 square kilometres, making it one of Africa’s largest protected areas for wildlife.
Selous has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its diverse wildlife and remote natural environments, with little to no evidence of human habitation. The area’s varied ecological makeup includes open savannahs, thick wooded areas, wetlands, and, obviously, river systems like the Rufiji River, which provide water for a variety of plants and animals.
Our guided tours offer guests the chance to see a variety of ecosystems, such as open savannas and winding rivers, and to learn about wildlife and the importance of preserving these habitats.

The Dry Season (June to October) is the peak time to view wildlife in Selous. The dry season also offers greater wildlife-viewing opportunities. Many water sources will have dried up, forcing wildlife into proximity to the Rufiji River and the surrounding lakes. Consequently, this offers great opportunities to view wildlife in open landscapes. Because vegetation will be less dense during the dry season, it will also be much easier to spot the many predators and the large herds of animals.
The Wet Season (November to May) provides a lush and vibrant landscape. During the wet season, the animals are less concentrated and dispersed throughout the reserve, making it an ideal time to be a bird watcher, photographer, or simply to enjoy the peace and solitude of the reserve. The breathtaking scenery and feeling of isolation and remoteness in the reserve will also be improved during the wet season.
Selous National Park is one of the most important and biologically varied areas of Africa. It contains several distinct ecosystems, including miombo forests, grasslands, wetlands, and riverbanks.
Selous National Park has a very high population density of the following species: elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and the largest population of endangered African wild dogs on the continent. The Rufiji River runs through Selous National Park, providing an essential water source for wildlife and creating spectacular scenes of coexistence.
Bird watchers will be very happy to see more than 400 bird species in Selous National Park, including fish eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters, and herons. Both aquatic and terrestrial habitats work together to make Selous National Park one of the world’s most dynamic wildlife theatres.
The Reserve is situated in southern Tanzania, a couple of hundred kilometres southwest of Dar es Salaam.
