Half-Day Nairobi Tour
This is a half-day tour that gets you up close to wildlife.
This is a half-day tour that gets you up close to wildlife.
08:00 am: Pick up from Nairobi hotel
Your driver will pick you up from your Nairobi hotel to the Giraffe Centre, where you will get an opportunity to see, interact with, and even feed the rare Rothschild's giraffe in an up-close experience within a conservation and learning centre within the city.
Visit the Giraffe Centre
This up-close, interactive visit allows you to feed the giraffes from a raised deck and learn about their conservation while doing so.
This wildlife and education centre is managed by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya (A.F.E.W.), a non-profit organisation founded in 1979 to save the endangered Rothschild's giraffe, whose habitat was quickly being encroached upon by human settlements and agriculture. At the time of its establishment, the Rothschild's giraffe had only 130 of its kind surviving in the wild, and thanks to conservation efforts and awareness, the species' population now stands at more than 500, and it has been successfully reintroduced into Lake Nakuru National Park, Mwea Game Reserve, Ruma National Park, and Nasalot Game Reserve.
Visit to David Sheldrick elephant orphanage.
Then proceed to the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage. Tucked in a serene, quiet location within Nairobi National Park, the orphanage offers shelter and expert care to baby elephants who have lost their parents to poaching and other calamities, as well as to other orphaned wild animals. It is run by a team of experienced conservationists who nurture the animals and make them comfortable until they are mature and ready to be reintroduced into the wild.
The orphanage opens to the public daily from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm, when visitors can watch the young elephants taking their milk feeds and playing during their bathing sessions. At 11:00 am, keepers bring the young elephants from the wild for the morning feeds. You might get a chance to touch them as they get their drinks. This orphanage is run by Daphne Sheldrick, the late David Sheldrick's wife. David Sheldrick was the first Warden of Tsavo East National Park and a celebrated naturalist.
The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage allows adopters to visit on an afternoon by prior appointment only. During a private afternoon visit, foster parents can get close to the elephants and bond with them in a more serene environment.
A keeper will deliver a presentation on each elephant's rescue story and conservation status. Visitors will have the chance to meet orphaned rhinos housed at the orphanage and to witness a brief overview of their rescue and current development in a separate, enclosed area at the sanctuary.
