Tsavo East National Park

Endless Plains of the Wild

A Timeless Sanctuary of Open Horizons and Untamed Wildlife

Tsavo East National Park is a large national park in southeastern Kenya, with mostly wide-open plains teeming with wildlife. It is considered one of Kenya’s most luxurious national parks, offering an authentic safari experience in an untamed environment.

Tsavo East is about 13,700 square kilometres and contains large herds of red elephants, which have become known for their distinctive red colour from rolling in the rich iron oxide soil found within the national park. This uniquely African park is also home to large populations of lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and several antelope species, making it highly desirable for wildlife-viewing on safari.

The eastern part of the park lies on the east side of the Tsavo River and contains diverse ecosystems, including semi-arid grasslands, savannah, riverine plant communities, and acacia woodlands. There are also notable geographical landmarks, such as the Yatta Plateau and the Lugard Loops, which can be seen during a visit to the park.

Due to its accessibility from major cities and coastal areas in Kenya, Tsavo East National Park is a popular safari destination for visitors, whether for a short trip or a longer safari experience.

When to Visit Tsavo East National Park?

A visit that significantly affects your safari experience.

The “dry” seasons (June-October and January-February) are the best times to view wildlife. Wildlife is congregating around waterholes. You will find it much easier to see animals in the dry season open plains because they will be concentrated around waterholes and drinking areas. The open plains are much easier to navigate for a game drive during dry seasons because they have fewer obstacles (like bushes) to obstruct your view, with the additional benefit of clear skies.

The “wet” seasons (March-May and November-December) transform the park into a lush, green oasis. For the birdwatchers out there, this is one of the best times, as the migrating birds will be back and the view will be bright and green. Photography during this season is excellent, thanks to the colourful, vibrant landscape.

Do consider your budget, travel distance, and comfort level before booking your safari trip to Tsavo East. Tsavo East offers a wide variety of safari products for visitors, including budget camping and luxury lodge accommodation, allowing travellers to tailor their safari experience.
