Saiwa Swamp National Park

Overview

Saiwa Swamp National Park, located in the western region of Kenya near the border with Uganda, is a hidden gem that offers a serene escape into nature. Covering only 3.2 square kilometers, it is Kenya’s smallest national park but is renowned for its rich biodiversity, especially as a haven for the endangered Sitatunga antelope. This wetland area is characterized by marshes, grasslands, and lush vegetation, providing an excellent habitat for both wildlife and a wide variety of bird species.

The park is easily accessible from Kitale town and offers a tranquil environment for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and eco-tourists looking for a unique wildlife experience. The park's peaceful atmosphere, combined with its scenic landscapes, makes it an ideal destination for those wanting to explore Kenya's wetlands and rare species of wildlife.

Best Time To Visit

The Best Time to Visit Saiwa Swamp National Park is during the dry season, from June to September. During this period, the weather is relatively dry, making the trails easier to navigate and the swamp less muddy. Wildlife is also more visible during these months as animals tend to gather around the remaining water sources. The rainy season (from March to May and October to December) can make the trails slippery and less accessible, but it is also the time when the park’s vegetation is lush, and birdwatching is especially rewarding, as migratory birds are present.
